Vamos a DF

Hitch hiking is an excellent form of transportation. Free. Usually more comfortable than the bus. People who pick up hitchers are usually quite interesting. Did I mention free? I had only heard the vast tales of my father’s hitch hiking journeys back and forth across the US, before arriving in Mexico. Never before had I actually attempted it. Jessica and I hopped a bus for the first portion of our trip, Making it as far as Querretaro before braving the freeway. Upon arrival at the bus station, we spent of great deal of time looking for food that was without meat. Finally we settled for tortas(Mexico’s version of the panini) that while did not have any meat in them… had the distinct taste of pork. From there we made the short walk from the bus station, to the freeway. As soon as we made it up the onramp, we passed a man in a truck that had pulled over to rearrange his things in the back. We took perhaps another two hundred steps before getting out our “DF” sign. About 3 minutes later, the same man in the pickup with the things in the back, now neatly arranged and securely tied down, pulled over in front of us, and said he wasn’t going as far as Mexico city, but could get us a lot closer. We eventually get ahold of Megan via payphone. She comes to meet us, and we sit and chat while Megan has some pizza from a hole in a false colonial brick wall. From there we hit Alcatraz, where the music is blasting, and conversation is roaring like a California forest fire in August. We walk to a table full of her friends, who are all sitting around a bucket full of sunshine, imbibing its rays. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ll get better at this one day

I haven’t really written at all about the last couple of weeks, but a lot has happened. A lot of it won’t make it here, as this simply isn’t the place for it. Lots of fun has been had though. I’ll break it up into sections, dated roughly a day or two after thay happened. This is your first installment of me trying to catch up. Read the rest of this entry »

Corruption

Corruption. You hear about it in the highest levels of Mexican Politics. You hear about the corrupt Policia Auxiliar, taking bribes or even being the perpetrators of petty, even serious crimes.. That is not where the corruption ends, its just where the stories you read in the newspaper and on the BBC stop. What they don’t tell you, is that corruption is a deeply rooted Mexican trait. While it certainly occurs on a grand and public political scale, at the very ‘top’ of Mexican society… it continues down to very bottom. To the senators and the governors and the mayors. To the public utilities. To the Post Office. To the landlords and the garbagemen. To the ambulantes lining the streets near the Zocalo. Right down to the friendly woman selling tuna y aguacate at the mercado. Read the rest of this entry »

Its a small world, afterall.

A few days ago, I befriended one of the waiters at the hostel near the Zocalo, Adrian. Ever since our meeting, he has been really intent on ‘hooking me up’ with a mexican girl. ‘Any one you want bro, let me know.’ he says. Last night I went to the hostel, around 530, to use the internet, and take advantage of the happy hour specials, of two familiars (32oz bottles) of Leon, for 65 pesos. Not really a great deal, but the hostel is pretty expensive… Anyhow, for an hour or so Adrian kept asking me ‘Which girl bro? Those girls over there? What about that one? Shes by herself! Just tell me.’ to which I kept replying ‘I’ll let you know when I see her’, mostly to get him to leave me alone about it. Not that I don’t appreciate the generosity, picking up girls just was not my MOD for the evening. I had a ton of emails to write, and work on this page to do (I’m sorry, it will look better soon, I swear!). Around seven a band started setting up, which Adrian told me was going to be reggae. I enjoy a good reggae band from time to time, so I told him I would take my computer home and be back by the time they started. Also, I had no cash left. If I was going to hang out for a bit, I would need some way to not be freeloading at the bar. Read the rest of this entry »

Let it rain

Today it was raining. Not in the beginning of the day so much, and not all day. But it rained. Oh, how it rained. My first part of the day consisted of getting tamales for breakfast, and a huge cup of juice. It was a thirst quenching amalgamation of orange, pineapple and cactus. It was so incredibly delicious, and was blended fresh, while we waited. On the way back to the departamento we spoke briefly with a very pleasant old man, who waddled quite nicely. He had a hard time walking, but by the look on his face you might imagine he was much enjoying it. Read the rest of this entry »
